Today we have a headline from the Times newspaper: 'Lane dwellers are streets ahead'
A survey of recently sold homes in England and Wales found that the name of the street is important to people when they buy a house. Some people are prepared to pay 50 thousand pounds extra if the address includes the word lane. This because lanes are apparently classy and more beautiful than streets and drives.
People in the UK imagine what a home looks like when they hear the address. If they hear the word lane, they think of pretty villages and lovely cottages. An address with words like street or, drive in it makes people think of small boring houses and they will pay less for an address like that.
Abigail asked some people in the office about their addresses. Do they live in a lane, street or drive?
One man says he lives in an avenue and prefers it to living in a lane because it makes him think of beautiful trees and lovely houses. One woman who lives on a road with lots of trees is not happy and wished it was called an avenue. Another woman who lives in a square is very happy because she can see trees, tennis courts and children playing.
That's what addresses mean in Britain and Abigail asks, what do addresses mean where you live? Which ones are classy and which are not?
