If the New York Times was in any doubt
as to what the Brazilian government thought of its article, the official
statement offers
clarification. "
In the light of this
frivolous untrue report which
offends the honour of the president," it says, "we are cancelling the visa of William Larry Rohter junior."
In the piece published on Sunday, Mr Rohter suggested that Brazilians were worried about the drinking habits of President Enacio Lula da Silva. He was pictured raising a glass at a beer festival. The allegation has been strongly denied by the Brazilian government and politicians of all parties have united in the criticism of the New York Times.
