Goodwin ton sees Sussex save game

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
Taunton (close, final day):
Somerset 557-8d drew with Sussex 203 & 272-3

Points: Somerset 12, Sussex 7

An unbeaten century from Murray Goodwin led Sussex to the safety of a draw on a low-key final day of their County Championship match in Somerset.

Sussex began the day 36-1, needing a further 318 to avoid an innings defeat, but never looking in danger of losing.

Michael Yardy weighed in with 78 before Goodwin, who ended with 106 not out, frustrated the Somerset attack.

Goodwin put on an unbroken 117 with Chris Adams (39 not out) before bad light ended play at 1645 BST.

Somerset's bowlers lacked any penetration on a flat last-day wicket and they had to be content with 12 points from a game they dominated, while Sussex took seven.

Yardy looked solid until, with the score on 155, he edged a drive off Steffan Jones and was well held by Marcus Trescothick at second slip, but by then Goodwin was well set.

The Zimbabwean had a scare on 84 when he edged Zander de Bruyn between Kieswetter and first slip Justin Langer.

But he went on to reach his ton off 169 deliveries, with 10 boundaries, and Adams proved a reliable partner as the pair comfortably saved the match.
