Danger warning over metal thefts

Witnesses are being asked to help find a gang who stole copper piping, leaving some properties in Leicester in a dangerous condition.

Thieves targeted premises on Charles Street and damaged gas systems and exposed the electricity supply about a month ago, Leicestershire police said.

In a further incident in Belgrave Gate, emergency services were called after electrics were left exposed.

In both cases police suspect that a large van was used to move the piping.

A police spokesperson said: "Thieves are not only exposing themselves to the risk of serious and fatal injuries, but they are also leaving the properties in an extremely dangerous condition with potentially fatal consequences for the owners."

The police are urging people to be vigilant, and also appealing to metal dealers to keep adequate records on sellers of copper and scrap metal.
