A six-year-old boy from Staffordshire remains in a critical condition after an accident which claimed his father's life on the M5 in Gloucestershire.

The boy, from Tamworth, was in a car being driven by his father, 33, from Birmingham, who died at the scene.

The driver of the other car involved in the crash, a woman, 37, from Leicester, was treated for minor injuries.

The accident happened by the motorway's northbound Michaelwood service station slip road on Wednesday afternoon.

Gloucestershire Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, between a Peugeot 205 and a Citroen Xsara, which happened at 1420 BST.

The motorway was closed northbound for more than seven hours to allow the crash to be investigated.
