A man has died after being stabbed in the head and chest in south Bristol.

Police were called to a disturbance in the Gatehouse Avenue area of Withywood on Saturday evening.

They found a man, believed to be in his 40s, with knife wounds. He was taken to Frenchay hospital in a critical condition but died on Sunday morning.

One man was arrested on Saturday night and a second man, in his 30s, was arrested on Sunday afternoon, a police spokesman confirmed.

The area has been sealed off while forensic experts examine the scene.

Police said there were a number of people in the Gatehouse Avenue area at the time of the stabbing who may have useful information.

A post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death is to be carried out later.
