Police cell death prompts inquiry

An investigation is under way after a woman died in a Bradford police cell.

Sharon Batey, 41, was arrested on alcohol-related matters on Monday, 7 July and taken to Bradford custody office where she was put into a cell.

The next morning she was found collapsed and attempts were made to resuscitate her. She was pronounced dead at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating.

Nicholas Long, IPCC Commissioner for Yorkshire and Humberside, said: "The IPCC's involvement is not necessarily an indication that West Yorkshire Police have made errors in this particular instance.

"However, we must ensure that all necessary policies and procedures were observed and the appropriate duty of care taken to determine whether there are any lessons to be learned from this sad incident."
