Road safety spot checks by police

Drivers were stopped and checked for road safety offences during a crackdown by Thames Valley Police in Berkshire.

On Thursday more than 80 motorists were checked on Oxford Road with 11 vehicles seized for not having insurance and/or the driver not having a valid licence.

Forty-four drivers were given fixed penalty notices for not wearing a seatbelt and another 14 for using their mobile phones while driving.

Another 16 vehicles were banned from the road because of dangerous defects.

Sgt Chris Appleby, of Thames Valley Police, said: "These results clearly show that Thames Valley Police and their partners will not tolerate irresponsible driving in any form, and will use all measures to prevent death and injury on our roads."
