Driver killed as tipper overturns

A lorry driver died when his tipper overturned on the M1 in Hertfordshire.

The articulated lorry, which was carrying domestic waste, overturned on the roundabout to access junction nine of the M1 and the A5, at Markyate.

The driver was taken to hospital but his injuries proved fatal. No other vehicles were involved, police said.

Police accident investigators and vehicle examiners are at the scene. Road closures will remain in place until about 1100 BST, police said.

Access from Dunstable heading to the southbound M1 is currently blocked and traffic is being diverted onto the northbound M1.

Northbound traffic on the A5 from Hemel is unable to access the M1 northbound and is being diverted back onto the southbound M1.

The northbound exit sliproad is also currently closed.

Hertfordshire Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash at 0415 BST, or with information, to contact them.
