Rail service campaigners increase

Overhead cables
Overhead cables brought down by a train caused delays in June

A rail commuter who launched an online petition calling for an inquiry into services between East Anglia and London said 600 people have now signed up.

Alex Stovold, from Norwich, claims that National Express East Anglia had failed commuters on lines between Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex and the capital.

The petition, set up on the Downing Street website, asks the Prime Minister to set up an inquiry.

National Express EA declined to comment but said they were aware of a petition.

Mr Stovold said he was fed up with delays and cancellations on the mainline and an online petition was the only way to get people in power to listen.

"East Anglia has been earmarked by the government for significant development and population growth in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games," Mr Stovold said.

"But since the beginning of this year there has been clear evidence of failures of the train service."

He is calling for action and investment now because "passengers in East Anglia deserve better", he said.
