A man has been jailed for life for the murder of a "devoted family man" who was stabbed to death in Gravesend five years ago.

Guljinder Singh Gurewal, 33, of no fixed address, was given a minimum of 13 years for the murder of Kamaljit Singh Kalon at Maidstone Crown Court.

Mr Kalon was found lying wounded at the entrance to Gordon Park and died of stabs wounds in hospital in July 2003.

Judge Andrew Patience QC told Gurewal it was an "utterly wicked" act.

He added: "I cannot overlook, how could I, that a life was brutally taken by you that night and nothing I can now say or do will bring the deceased back."

Mr Kalon, from Sidcup, south-east London, who was also known as Bobby, left a wife, Ravinder, who had three children from a previous marriage.

He was previously described by his wife as a "loving husband and someone who was devoted to his family in the UK and relatives in India".

Mr Kalon had travelled to Gravesend on the day of his death for a pre-arranged meeting with Gurewal and another man.

Following Gurewal's sentencing, Kent Police said they were still looking for another person in connection with Mr Kalon's murder.

Det Supt Anne Brittain, said: "We are committed and determined that this case will remain open until all those responsible are brought to justice.

"Our thoughts are with Ravinder and her family and we hope that they can take some comfort from today's sentencing."

Kent Police and Mrs Kalon made a number of appeals for information over the whereabouts of Gurewal before he was arrested in December 2007.

Gurewal's minimum sentence was reduced to 12 years and 107 days allowing for the time already served in custody.
