Coach crash victim is identified

The coach was on the way back from a trip to Alton Towers

Police have named the man who died when a coach careered down an embankment in Staffordshire as 26-year-old Piotr Wolski from Poland.

Another 71 were hurt when the coach, which was travelling back to Northamptonshire from Alton Towers, hit a wall and landed in a garden.

Police said searches at the scene were concluded on Wednesday night.

Two people, including the 62-year-old coach driver from Peterborough, remain in a critical condition.

Police said Mr Wolski had been living at Lutton Farm, in Oundle, Northamptonshire, along with the other migrant workers from countries including Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and South Africa.

They had been on the way back from a day trip to the theme park, when the crash happened.

The coach hit two stationary cars, smashed through a wall, then rolled down an embankment into a garden.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said a post-mortem examination would be carried out on Mr Wolski's body later.

A 21-year-old woman being treated at Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital is still in a critical condition.

Interview passengers

However, another 21-year-old woman who is at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire has improved from being in a critical condition to being stable, police said.

Officers began to interview the coach's passengers on Wednesday.

Tests are being carried out on the coach at a police garage.

Ch Insp John Maddox said: "The police investigation, at this stage, is focusing on the coach itself rather than the road where the crash happened.

"Examination of the coach is ongoing and officers are beginning to interview the coach's passengers.

"Although our inquiries have concluded at the scene, local officers will maintain a highly visible presence in the village over the next few days."

He thanked Alton Towers and local residents for their co-operation over the last few days.
