A one-year-old boy from the UK is in intensive care after falling from a hotel balcony in Spain.

Daniel Betley, from Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, was on holiday with his mother and grandparents in Cambrils on Costa Dorada when he fell 16ft (4.8m).

He was flown by helicopter to the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona with head injuries.

A spokesman for the hospital said the youngster's condition was currently "stable but serious".

The toddler, who will be two next month, will remain in hospital for several days at least, said the spokesman.

A spokesman for the Best Cambrils Hotel, where the family was staying, said: "The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon. Our staff were first alerted when they heard screaming.

"He was flown 100km to hospital in Barcelona with his mother. His grandparents have also gone there to be with him."

Police based at the beach resort could not confirm that they were investigating.

Neighbours of the family in Vimy Road, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, said Daniel's mother Louise Betley had gone on holiday with her parents at the start of the week.
