Motorway closed during roadworks

Motorists are being warned about a series of overnight closures to a stretch of motorway in County Durham.

From 21 July the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) will be closed between Junctions 60 and 59, from Preston to Swan Carr.

Traffic will be diverted west along the A689 to Rushyford, then south along the A167, between 2000 and 0600 BST.

The Highways Agency is carrying out the £300,000 resurfacing work, which is expected to be complete by 26 July.

Steve Bishop, Highways Agency project manager, said: "The new carriageway surface will reduce the noise of traffic travelling along this stretch of the A1(M) which will benefit both drivers and nearby communities.

"We apologise to drivers for the disruption caused by this closure."
