Baby boy's death sparks inquiry

The unexplained death of a three-month-old baby boy in Crawley is being investigated by police child protection officers.

Sussex Police Det Insp Nick May said the "tragic death" was not suspicious but officers were "trying to establish why this very young child died".

A police statement said a post-mortem examination and toxicology tests would take "a couple of weeks".

The child was taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill on 7 July.

'Very difficult time'

Det Insp May said the infant was taken to hospital by ambulance after a call from the child's "distraught mother".

He said the baby boy was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police were "working closely" with colleagues from the NHS and West Sussex social services and the coroner had been informed, he added.

And he said the mother was being supported by her family, her GP surgery and health visitors, "during this very difficult time".
