Water companies have drawn up 25-year plans to meet demand
|
Water users are being urged to help suppliers plan for their needs over the next quarter of a century.
The Consumer Council for Water wants users to have their say on whether the supply companies have got it right.
David Bland, Chair of the South East Water Consumer Council, said: "Making sure that enough water is available for everyday use is a major concern.
"Consumers remember droughts in 2004 and 2006 and the hosepipe bans and want a safe, ample and reliable service."
Each person in the UK uses an average of 150 litres a day and individual use has grown by 1% per year since 1930.
'Increased bills'
The government says this continuing increase in water use is unsustainable and, together with population growth, is creating a serious strain on available water resources.
All water companies have prepared 25 year plans to address these issues, and outline how they will make sure there is enough water to meet demand.
These plans will have an influence on future water prices.
Mr Bland added: "Consumers have told us in our research that they want a safe, ample and reliable service, but each new reservoir planned or further investment in leakage reduction comes at a cost which could mean an increase in customers' bills.
"We want to be sure that water companies are investing in the projects that consumers see as a priority.
"This is the first time that these plans have been produced for public consultation and we would encourage everyone to look at their local company's plan and have their say."
