A post-mortem examination has taken place of the body of a 10-month-old girl who died after falling into the River Thames.

Monica Parsons fell into the water at Ferry Lane, Goring, south Oxfordshire.

Monica was pulled from the water by a couple, John and Sue West, who were on a boat when they heard her mother's screams.

Doctors tried to resuscitate her but her parents were told she would not recover, and she died in hospital.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The post-mortem examination of Monica's body was held at the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford.

On Wednesday, doctors initially told Monica's parents that it was unlikely she would survive when her heartbeat had slowed to the extent it was "not enough to sustain life".

Monica, from Streatley, Berkshire, was later confirmed dead in intensive care, despite briefly being revived when her heartbeat temporarily increased.

Det Sgt Alun Watkins, of Thames Valley Police, said the incident was being treated as an unexplained death.
