Olympic medallist Steve Cram is to be officially installed as chancellor of Sunderland University.

The Jarrow-born former athlete will take over from film producer Lord Puttnam at a ceremony at the university on Friday.

Mr Cram, who is now a commentator with the BBC, has a long history with the university and received his sports studies degree there in 1983.

Lord Puttnam was the university's chancellor for 10 years.

Mr Cram, speaking after the chancellorship was announced last month, described the honour as a "wonderful opportunity".

The ceremony is at the university's Sir Tom Cowie Campus.
