Four held after beach drugs watch

Four suspected drugs smugglers are being questioned at a Kent police station after being arrested after landing on a beach near Folkestone.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police and the UK Border Agency intercepted an inflatable boat, believed to have come from France, on Friday.

A search of the boat and surrounding area led to eight holdalls being found in a nearby lock-up container.

They contained substances thought to be drugs intended for the London streets.

"The interception has significantly disrupted what we believe was a large shipment of class A, B and C drugs," said Det Insp Grant Johnson.

Analysis of the 100 kg of substances is expected to confirm they were cocaine, amphetamine and skunk cannabis with a street value in the range of £3m to £10m.

The four men are being held at Ashford police station.
