Pursued car rammed level crossing

Police had to stop their pursuit of a Land Rover when it rammed level crossing barriers at a railway station and drove straight across.

Officers said that "for obvious safety reasons", the police vehicle abandoned its pursuit after the incident at Etchingham on Thursday.

A helicopter was scrambled to run an aerial search but was unable to find the Land Rover, Sussex Police said.

It was later found abandoned in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Appealing for information, a police spokesman said the white Land Rover was being followed along the A265, when it hit the level crossing barriers at Etchingham railway station in East Sussex.

No police officers or members of the public were injured in the incident at about 1355 BST on Thursday.
