Peter Woodhams was murdered after a seven-month campaign of violence

Two detectives forced to resign after carrying out a "flawed" investigation into an attack on a young father who was then murdered have been reinstated.

Peter Woodhams, 22, was shot dead in Canning Town, east London, in August 2006, following a campaign of victimisation by a local gang.

His family claimed police "had blood on their hands".

But a Metropolitan Police review found that failings identified "did not amount to gross negligence".

Mr Woodhams was shot dead outside his home after months of bullying and violence.

Bradley Tucker, 18, was jailed for life at the Old Bailey for his murder.

The two detectives leading the initial investigation, a detective sergeant and a detective constable, admitted a series of failings during a misconduct hearing in October 2007.

They include failures to follow up evidence prior to Mr Woodhams' murder.

But after seeking an appeal, the sanctions imposed were found to be "disproportionate".

The detective sergeant was reduced in rank and a fine of 13 days pay was imposed on the detective constable.
