Debate on Council Tax

Bitter exchanges took place in the chamber on 5 December 2012 as AMs discussed a motion to suspend standing orders.

The suspension of the standing orders would have allowed the AMs to discuss the council tax reduction schemes.

The government needed a two-third majority to suspend standing orders.

Thirty three AMs voted in favour and 18 voted against the suspension.

The support scheme for 330,000 households in receipt of council tax benefit in now in jeopardy.

As a result of the vote, the assembly has been recalled during recess on 19 December 2012 to discuss the council tax schemes.
