Conservative AM Antoinette Sandbach urged the UK government to change the way the Child Support Agency operated.

The Conservative AM for North Wales, was leading a short debate on 21 September 2011.

The Conservative AM highlighted the challenges that the CSA is faced with and the way in which that affects families in Wales.

According to Ms Sandbach, 34% of all families in Wales are single parent families.

She stressed that £35m in arrears are owed as child maintenance to single parent families in North Wales and £196m in Wales as a whole.

The deputy minister for children and social services agreed with Ms Sandbach that the current situation was unacceptable and that the UK Government needs to address the problem.

Gwenda Thomas insisted that the Welsh Government was working hard to lift families in Wales out of poverty.
