Statement on homelessness

Jocelyn Davies AM, the Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration, made a statement on the assembly government's homelessness strategy, on 26 January 2010.

The deputy minister announced an extra £1m to tackle homelessness, from the assembly government.

Ms Davies said the extra funding would be to improve access to advice centres for homeless people.

In July 2009, the Assembly Government unveiled a 10-year strategy to tackle homelessness in Wales.

Ms Davies stressed that the strategy aimed to tackle the underlying causes of homelessness which are linked to other problems in society, such as unemployment and substance abuse.

The strategy also aims to change the way housing services are delivered so that people in need are dealt with faster.

The statement received cross party support on the floor of the chamber.
