Improvements to the A75 debate

Labour MSP Elaine Murray called on Transport Minister Keith Brown to give assurance that improvements the Hardgrove to Kinmount section of the A75 was a top priority and that construction would start soon, on 31 May 2012.

The motion for Ms Murray's member's debate focussed on the spate of recent accidents on the A75 Stranraer to Gretna trunk road, including two fatalities.

One of the fatalities was a three-week-old boy called Oliver Hewson in March.

She asked the minister to indicate "ways in which we can make sure drivers drive more cautiously on dangerous sections of road".

Transport Minister Keith Brown said the first minister had recently written to the prime minister to ask for funding for the improvement of the A75 but his request had been turned down.

Mr Brown said "the SNP government will upgrade the road if the UK government gives us that funding".

He also said that the A75 safety group was due to meet in July and that he was "perfectly willing and keen to raise the issues from the debate tonight at that meeting".
