Drum Brae Library debate

Edinburgh Western SNP MSP Colin Keir told MSPs the new Drum Brae Library and Community Hub Project was a "superb advertisement for community engagement".

Mr Keir was leading his member's debate on 1 February 2012.

The Hub was opened on 31 January 2012, which Mr Keir said was "a culmination of 40 years of campaigning" and he said it was "a fantastic day" with more than one thousand people attending.

The three-storey community-purpose building, including a long-awaited new library, a day-care centre for older people and office facilities, is the first project to be developed as part of the Scottish Futures Trust Hub programme.

Mr Keir told MSPs he was "more than delighted" that the £5.7m project came in "on time and on budget."

He also welcomed the involvement of more than 700 local people who took part in the consulation and he said the hub's opening was a "fantastic achievement" for all those involved.

In responding to the debate, Local Government Minister Derek Mackay said the project met the community's needs, involved local people, and created employment and economic growth.

Therefore it was a "model we should all celebrate", he concluded.
