Scottish Parliament

The Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee took evidence on the Forth Crossing Replacement Project on 15 March 2011.

Last year the Scottish Parliament passed, by majority, new legislation needed to build the £2bn crossing, due for completion by 2016.

Ministers say the condition of the existing bridge, linking Edinburgh and Fife, is deteriorating.

The project has come under attack from environmental campaigners and there has been a row over how to fund it.

MSPs quizzed David Climie, Lawrence Shackman and Stewart Turner from the Forth Replacement Crossing Team at Transport Scotland.

The questions covered a wide range of issues relating to the building of the new bridge.

Lawrence Shackman was asked to give an account of Transport Scotland's efforts to consult residents about the new project.

The SNP MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville said the committee had feedback from communities suggesting little true consultation was taking place with them.

Mr Shackman was also asked whether pedestrians and cyclists could continue to cross the Forth Road Bridge.

Convener Patrick Harvie asked David Climie if V.A.T on the project was due to increase because of recent rate changes.

Mr Climie said he could confirm the additional V.A.T could be accomodated within the "published outturn costs".
