Member's business: St Andrew's Day 2010

SNP MSP John Wilson called for St Andrews Day to be more widely recognised as a national holiday across Scotland by more public bodies and organisations.

Mr Wilson said full public holiday status for St Andrew's day would give it national identity and would bring Scotland in line with other European countries, during member's business on 25 November 2010.

Legislation to make St Andrew's Day a national holiday was first put forward by independent MSP Dennis Canavan and passed unanimously by parliament in 2006.

He said :"I hope that by raising this issue in Parliament we can not only reflect on how we mark St Andrew's Day but what more can be done to ensure the full national holiday that was the central spirit of the law parliament passed becomes a reality."

Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop said she was confident that in the years ahead recognition of St Andrew's day as a holiday would grow.
