Conservative MSP Elizabeth Smith led a debate on the 150th anniversary of the Armed Forces' Cadet Movementon 24 March 2010.

The anniversary will see 131,000 current cadets taking part in events across the United Kingdom, with a programme of events in Scotland and events overseas.

Ms Smith said the Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force, Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force had given great opportunities to young people to develop self-confidence, teamwork, leadership and responsibility through a wide range of activities.

She also said that the greatest asset of the movement was that it was a positive framework.

Communities Minister Alex Neil encouraged all members of parliament to support the anniversary and celebrations and congratulated the cadet movement on their sucesses.
