Female offenders debate

MSPs voted unanimously to back the findings of the Equal Opportunities Committee's inquiry into female offenders in the justice system on 11 February 2010.

Tory MSP Margaret Mitchell, the convenor of the committee, told the chamber reforms were needed to the way women with mental health problems in the justice system were treated.

The inquiry also found more needed to be done to help female offenders rehabilitate.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said the debate was remarkably consensual and welcomed the committee's report, stating that the challenges posed by the mental health of women in Cornton Vale must be met.
