Ministerial statement on C.difficile

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon updated MSPs on 12 November 2009 on the C. difficile outbreak in Ward 31 at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, which killed two hospital patients and contributed to the deaths of three more.

Ms Sturgeon said that NHS Tayside had made a mistake saying the outbreak was over a 10-week period, but was actually from 21 October to 6 November.

She told parliament NHS Tayside and Health Protection Scotland investigations were under way and that transparency in their inquiries would be a priority.

The health secretary confirmed there had been no new cases of C. difficile on Ward 31 at Ninewells Hospital since 30 October and that a deep clean of the ward had taken place on 11 October.
