NSMC: Tourism

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster made two statements on recent meetings of the North South Ministerial Council (NSMC) on tourism and on trade and business development, on 14 January 2013.

In reply to a question from the SDLP's Patsy McGlone about the possible effects of recent street violence on tourism, Mrs Foster said that Northern Ireland had been back of the world's television screens "for all the wrong reasons".

"It has to stop if we are to bring jobs and prosperity," she added.

In her statement, the minister said the NSMC had discussed major tourist events and initiatives planned for 2013, including the UK City of Culture in Londonderry and the World Police and Fire Games, "which will be the biggest single sporting event ever hosted in Belfast".

The minister's statement on trade and business development touched on matters including the stimulation of applications for EU grants, the Irish Presidency of the EU, and the work of InterTradeIreland.
