Question Time

Culture Minister Caral Ni Chuilin told MLAs that boxing clubs must be affiliated to a recognised boxing body to be eligible for government funding, on 13 February 2012.

The previous day, the minister had told the assembly that the Sandy Row Boxing Club in south Belfast would be able to express an interest in accessing funding from a new government scheme.

In reply to a question from the UUP's Michael McGimpsey, Ms Ni Chuilin explained that whilst the club had been a member of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association within the previous three years, it was currently not a member and would need to join a recognised body in order to avail of funding from the scheme.

The minister was asked about funding for sports in Lisburn, following the award of European City of Sport status.

Ms Ni Chuilin said a working party had been set up involving Sport NI and Lisburn City Council.

"This is a good news story for Lisburn and indeed the entire north," she said.

The Education Minister, John O'Dowd answered questions on a number of matters including pre-school places, numeracy and literacy assessments for children with hearing difficulties, and careers guidance in schools.
