Renewable heat incentive scheme

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme (RHI) would help break the current reliance on fossil fuels, on 22 October 2012.

The minister said the scheme would provide a financial incentive for businesses, schools and community organisations that made use of renewable heating technologies.

She said the scheme would eventually be extended to the domestic market.

Patsy McGlone of the SDLP, who chairs the enterprise committee, welcomed the introduction of the RHI.

He said all long-term predictions pointed to continued high prices for oill and gas.

In her summing-up, the minister described the RHI as "a groundbreaking scheme for Northern Ireland".

The motion to approve the regulations for RHI was carried on an oral vote.
