Question Time: Culture and Regional Development

The price of bagpipes was discussed during questions to the culture minister, on 28 May 2012.

The DUP's Brenda Hale asked the minister, Caral Ni Chuilin, if there were any plans to increase the £200,000 available to the Arts Council for musical instruments for marching bands.

The minister said £800,000 had been made available for instruments, and she sympathised with Mrs Hale's point that a set of bagpipes cost £2,000.

Pat Doherty of Sinn Fein asked about the possibility of an all-Ireland fishing licence.

Ms Ni Chuilin said she favoured the idea as it would make life much easier for visiting anglers who wanted to fish in both north and south.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy called for "a mature debate" on the future form of governance for Northern Ireland Water.

Stewart Dickson of Alliance spoke in favour of a mutualised version of governance.

The minister said the future organisation would depend on the future funding of water.

He said he had been considering governance models in other parts of the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and it was his intention to put a paper to the executive in the near future.
