Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy and Environment Minister Alex Attwood made statements on a recent transport meeting of the North South Ministerial Council, on 7 November 2011.

Danny Kennedy reported that the council discussed progress on the A5 and A8 road projects, but said he was not yet in a position to give details of a report being produced by the Cross Border Steering Group on both projects.

The environment minister reported that work on the harmonisation of blood alcohol levels in Ireland and Northern Ireland was continuing.

Alex Attwood plans to cut the blood alcohol limit from the current level of 80mg/100ml to 50mg/100ml, and introduce a lower limit of 20mg/100ml for young drivers and people who earn their living from driving. The proposals are in line with those recently introduced in the Republic of Ireland.

He added that work to introduce the mutual recognition of penalty points on both sides of the border was timetabled to be completed by 2014.
