Utilisation of the former site of the Maze Prison continued

The debate continued after Question Time.

A UUP motion noting concern over the building of a proposed conflict transformation centre at the site of the former Maze Prison was amended, on 25 October 2011.

The SDLP amendment called on the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister to prioritise the needs of victims in developing the centre at the site.

Winding on the amendment Alban Maginness said that while he commended the past work of the UUP in doing the "heavy lifting" by leading proposals for the centre, he felt that their change in position "did not do them any credit".

For the DUP Robin Newton said that he had felt "sadness and scepticism" in considering the timing of the debate, which he felt was based on political rather than economic reasons.

He reiterated the dominant view of the speakers in the debate that the development would bring significant social and economic benefits to Northern Ireland.
