Nomination to act as Principal Deputy Speaker

The Sinn Fein MLA Francie Molloy was elected to the newly-created position of principal deputy speaker, on 28 June 2011.

Mr Molloy was nominated by fellow Sinn Fein MLA Jennifer McCann who said Mr Molloy had carried out his duties as a deputy speaker in an impartial manner.

The nomination was opposed by the UUP leader, Tom Elliott, who said Mr Molloy was "unfit to hold this position".

He said he was sure the appointment would go through due to support from the DUP and Sinn Fein.

For the Alliance Party Chris Lyttle said they would vote against the nomination as they had opposed the introduction of the post of principal deputy speaker.

The TUV's Jim Allister said the appointment of Mr Molloy was the culmination of the of the first stage of a "sordid deal" between the DUP and Sinn Fein.

Mr Molloy was elected to the post of Principal Deputy Speaker on a cross-community vote.
