DETI officials briefed the committee on the implementation of an EU directive on internal gas and electricity markets, on 10 March 2011.

Chairperson Alban Maginness said it was a matter of regret that this "very contentious matter" was coming to the committee at such a late stage.

The committee also heard an update on the 'MATRIX' Northern Ireland Science Industry Panel.

Bernard McKeown of the MATRIX secretariat explained that the panel had been established as the voice of high technology business to advise the executive on the technological challenge facing the Northern Ireland economy.

It involved hi-tech businesses such as Bombardier and Wrightbus, as well as Northern Ireland's two universities.

Alasdair McDonnell of the SDLP said he felt frustrated by the reluctance of medical researchers to commercialise te results of their work.

"I don't know whose job it is to kick ass," he added.
