Poor Attendance at School

Over 40% of schoolchildren in certain education wards have less than 85% attendance rates, the assembly heard on 28 June 2010.

Moving a motion on poor school attendance, the UUP's Roy Beggs said that Belfast wards such as The Mount, Woodstock and Island were among those with the highest truancy rates.

The UUP motion urged the Education Minister Caitríona Ruane to prioritise a strategy to tackle the lack of school attendance.

In response, the minister said that her department prioritised underachievement, and that she was looking to neither the UK nor Ireland for models, but was aiming for results similar to the Finnish school system.
