Committee backs 'tobacconist sanction'

The health committee took evidence on the provision of social services on 19 November 2009.

Committee members also discussed the provision of specialist advice for the health budget.

During the meeting, members agreed to write to the minister backing his proposals for a "3 strikes and you're out" sanction against tobacconists who sell cigarettes to those under the legal age of 18.

If retailers fail to challenge an under-age person buying cigarettes on three or more occasions, they will have their licence to sell tobacco revoked.

Committee chair Jim Wells said it was an excellent idea, and another member said it should be extended to cover the sale of alcohol.
