Health has always been an area of fierce political debate, whether it's on the question of funding or how healthcare is delivered. Once the preserve of the UK Parliament, health is now largely administered by the devolved institutions.

There is also an A-to-Z guide to information on a wide variety of health issues called Medical Notes.

The BBC runs a website giving health, fitness and nutrition information, which includes an index of illnesses and conditions.

BBC radio also broadcasts regular programmes on the subject, including the World Service's programme on the issues affecting the world of health and medicine, Health Check, and Radio 1's Surgery, which has healthcare information tailored to 18- to 25-year-olds.

There is also a guide to all other BBC programmes relating to health, and a section in the iPlayer where you can watch and listen to programmes on health and wellbeing directly.

There is also a special report marking 60 years of the NHS.
