University education debate

On 12 November 2012 peers took part in a debate called by Labour's Lord Wills on university education and research in the arts, humanities and fundamental science.

UK universities held four of the six top slots in a global university "league table" compiled by QS World University Rankings in September 2012.

The QS rankings rate the world's top 400 universities, evaluating each institution's strengths in research, teaching, the employability of its graduates and international outlook.

John O'Leary, part of the board that assembled the latest rankings and editor of the Times Good University Guide, says a greater emphasis on research has helped UK universities to hold so many places in the top six.
