Armed forces redundancies statement

On 2 March 2011 Lord Astor of Hever repeated a statement made earlier in the Commons on armed forces redundancies.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox was summoned to the despatch box to answer an urgent question from his opposite number, Jim Murphy.

The government intends to reduce the total number of armed forces personnel by 17,000 over the next four years, and estimates that it will need to make 11,000 redundancies to meet this target.

The MoD says the first wave of redundancies will be made in September.
