Oral questions

Health spokesman Baroness Thornton has said the government intends to move "as quickly as we can" to put into effect a proposed new law to ban cigarette vending machines.

MPs last month agreed an amendment to the Health Bill from Labour's Ian McCartney to outlaw the machines, although peers will have to agree to the move next week before it reaches the statute book.

Baroness Thornton told peers at oral questions on 2 November that regulations to bring into force other provisions in the Bill, such as banning tobacco displays in shops, would be introduced "as soon as practicable" after a consultation that ends in January 2010.

Other questions focused on the British military and voting, the UN Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, and Zimbabwe.
