Debate on antibiotics and farming

Conservative MP for Richmond Park Zac Goldsmith led a debate on the use of antibiotics in intensive farming on 9 January 2013.

Mr Goldsmith tabled an Early Day Motion in October 2012 arguing that antibiotics are overused in farming.

The World Health Organisation has linked the use of antibiotics in livestock farming to the spread of antibiotic-resistant salmonella.

The campaign group Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture was quoted in the Farmers' Guardian as saying the EDM "repeats and relies on some of the myths on the use of antibiotics in agriculture".
