Debate on local government leaders

Conservative MP John Stevenson led a debate on leadership in local government.

Mr Stevenson, MP for Carlisle, discussed his ideas about how to strengthen the management of local authorities in Westminster Hall on 9 January 2013.

Mr Stevenson wants a stronger role for local elected mayors.

In May 2012, Bristol voted "yes" in a referendum on whether to have an elected mayor and Doncaster voted to retain its mayoralty.

Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Wakefield each voted "no" to having an elected mayor.
