Energy markets debate

On 20 December 2012, Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Committee Tim Yeo outlined his committee's report on consumers' engagement with energy markets.

The report calls on the big six energy companies to report on how much electricity they have bought from or sold to themselves, in an effort to increase transparency.

MPs on the committee believe this would encourage competition in the energy market and restore consumer trust.

The committee is also launching two inquiries. The first one will focus on energy prices, profits and poverty; the second inquiry will look at the smart meter roll-out.

Plans to simplify energy tariffs are currently before Parliament in the Energy Bill.
