Adjournment debate

The video for this item of business will appear here.

Conservative MP Richard Drax led an adjournment debate on Portland's search and rescue service on 19 December 2012.

The Portland search and rescue helicopter base on the south-west coast is scheduled to close in 2018 under government plans to streamline the UK's coastguard service.

Mr Drax has opened an e-petition to retain the helicopter that currently has around 13,000 signatures.

He claims replacing it with a regional service "breaks the integrity" of the cover for that area of Dorset.

The Department for Transport has previously said a more modern, faster fleet of helicopters operating from fewer bases will provide a more reliable service that still meets key requirements.
