International development questions

A Labour MP has asked the government when it will legislate to enshrine its commitment to spend 0.7% of gross domestic product on overseas aid into law.

Edinburgh South MP Ian Murray asked International Development Minister Alan Duncan when a bill would be introduced to Parliament, "or is this just another broken promise?".

He was speaking during questions to the department on 12 December 2012.

Mr Duncan said Prime Minister David Cameron had "been clear" that the international aid commitment would be written into law.

He said a bill would be brought forward "as soon as parliamentary time allows", adding that the coalition was behaving as if the law was "already in place".
